First I’ll go over the core trinity of characters (the protagonist, antagonist, and deuteragonist) and afterwards I’ll delve into the most popular kinds of side characters (the mentor and the love interest).

I could write pages about each Outsiders character but by the end of TWTTIS, I still kind of felt I didn't really know the characters.Perhaps the most fundamental building blocks of story, characters are the people we love, hate, scrutinize, and try to understand. The difference in the writing became really obvious to me, when Ponyboy appeared and I wanted to know more about how he was going then about Bryon or Mark. I found it funny that by the end, i didnt much care about the characters, while reading The Outsiders, I was deeply invested in all of them. I think were told too much about everyone, but never shown much to get our own idea of the characters. In saying that, the characters in TWT,TIS actually all kind of fell flat for me, compared with The Outsiders. So yes, I would say he is dynamic, but not in the sense that his character has grown, just changed. Then he kind of goes through the same thing Ponyboy did in The Outsiders. He suddenly starts to see Mark in this bad light, partly due to Cathy and it changes his relationship with Mark, but I doesn't really change his characteristics, until after Mark is turned in. So I would say that he is quite dynamic, but I can see how you could overlook that as we as readers are just told about Mark, while we aren't really shown much.īryon is harder for me because his change is more as a result of what he has done, rather then character growth. All Mark really had was Bryon, and he was betrayed by him. Mark is hardened and bitter, and doesn't see any future for himself. Like he says, he can't talk himself out of trouble anymore.
By the end of the book Mark isn't friendly and carefree.
At the beginning of the book he's described as friendly and innocent (in the sense of not seeing what he does as wrong) and Bryon constantly compares him to being a loyal lion, that everyone wants standing between them and the world.
